GOLDEN ARROWS 0
1 KAIZER CHIEFS
Date: Monday, 19 December 2013
Venue: Moses MadhibaStadium
Lamontville Golden Arrows suffered a disappoint home loss to Kaizer Chiefs in their penultimate match of the year but can also take heart from a much improved display against the Absa Premiership champions.
It was only a controversial penalty shortly after half-time that separated the two sides with Mzivukile Tom handling the ball in the box to allow Bernard Parker to notch the game’s only goal in the 48th minute.
But it was Arrows who finished the stronger of the two teams with a spirited second half display that coach Mark Harrison said was a major improvement on their form of recent matches.
Arrows held Chiefs at bay in a first half devoid of any real chances until Chiefs twice struck the woodwork, first from a botched clearance and then Siboniso Gaxa squandering a good chance with a header against the upright. Later Siyabonga Nkosi also got a shot in, which hit the outside of the post.
But after Chiefs had taken the lead, it took two wonder saves from Itumeleng Khune to deny Abafana Bes’thende the equaliser as he parried an around-the -corner shot from Bongi Ntuli and then punched away under pressure from Jabulani Nene.
Flying full back Siyabonga Zwane was voted man of the match for his spirited display in defence and his continual forays forward which created a handful of half chances for Arrows near the end of the game.
Arrows, who remain bottom of the standings, now finish the year with a tough away game at African Champions League runners-up Orlando Pirates in Soweto on Sunday.
