BIDVEST WITS 1

Date: WEDNESDAY, 28 August 2013
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Lamontville Golden Arrows suffered a narrow 1-0 loss away at Bidvest Wits in their first away match of the new Absa Premiership season.
The goal came after 33 minutes when Malawian international Robin Ngalande got in between the defence to head home a cross from Bhongolwethu Jayiya.
Arrows were under early pressure as Benjani Mwaruwari and Sifiso Vilakazi tested Siya Ngoma inside the first two minutes. Mwaruwari’s initial effort was an embarrassing miss and set a trend for the rest of the game.
But Arrows were not overawed and hit the crossbar from a seventh minute free kick, sending a strong signal of their own ability.
Arrows forced a clearance from Wits’ new signing Koffi Dankowa as a corner from Kgotso Polelo proved dangerous.
Wits then produced two efforts from Matthew Pattison and Vilakazi that sailed close to goal before Ngoma made a save from Denver Mukamba in the 22nd minute.
After half-time, Abafana Bes’thende coach Manqoba Mngqithi brought the experienced wide player Philani Shange on for Mandla Mdunge.
But Wits should have increased their tally had the veteran Mwaruwari not missed two more gilt-edged chances early in the second half and then had a shot cleared off the line in the 70th minute.
Arrows now have a single point from their first two matches of the season after drawing their opening game at home to Ajax Cape Town.
