Lamontville Golden Arrows have slipped to a 2-1 home loss to Mpumalanga Black Aces in their Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.
Goals from Method Mwanjale and Themba Zwane gave the visitors the three points, while Rudolf Bester equalized just before the hour-mark for Abafana Bes’thende.
Golden Arrows co-coaches Shaun Bartlett and Bheka Phakathi handed a debut to new signing Chris Katongo, who arrived at the club this week on a four-month deal.
The veteran Zambia international, who has played previously in the PSL at Jomo Cosmos, was drafted straight into the starting line-up alongside compatriot Festus Mbewe.
Abia Nale tested home goalkeeper Arthur Bartman early on with a snap shot that the 41-year-old held on to comfortably. Vuyisile Ntombayithethi headed over for Arrows from Siyanda Zwane’s ball into the box, while Mbewe also went close with his effort.
The visitors were ahead on 26 minutes and it was an unlucky moment for Golden Arrows. Mwanjale’s free-kick was deflected, wrong-footing Bartman and flying into the net.
Bester equalized for the home side just seconds after coming onto the pitch to replace Katongo.
Ntombayithethi provided the cross and the Namibian international was on hand to head the ball home.
Substitute Nhlanhla Zothwane had a chance to give Golden Arrows the lead but put his header wide and it was the visitors who found the next goal.
Thabo Qalinge’s free-kick was slotted home by Zwane with a neat finish 15 minutes from time.
Next up for Golden Arrows is an away trip to Moroka Swallows on Tuesday.
