SUPERSPORT UTD 3
1 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Nedbank Cup
Date: Wednesday, 9 March 2010
Venue: Loftus Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30pm
Lamontville Golden Arrows took league champions SuperSport United to extra time but succumbed to two late goals to go out 3-1 in the first round of the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday night.
Abafana Bes’tende put up a gutsy display despite making six changes and playing with a debutant goalkeeper and experimental defence but ran out of steam in the last 10 minutes of the cup tie at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
Coach Zoran Filipovic elected to play with several fringe players and gave Siphamandla Ntombela a debut in goal in an effort to give an opportunity to squad players and look at some options for the final six matches of the league season.
Ntombela looked shaky at the start but proved a hero in the second half with several key saves before carp meant he had to go off at the start of extra time.
It also cost the club the chance of bringing on a fresh set of legs in outfield for added 30 minutes and ultimately cost the team
Arrows, without the suspended Collins Mbesuma, were a goal down after 15 minutes when Kermit Erasmus cut through the defence to score but Thamsanqa Gabuza was brought down by SuperSport captain Morgan Gould some 13 minutes later and Nhlanhla Zothwane converted the resultant penalty. He has now scored in each of the last three seasons against SuperSport.
The second half brought no change to the score, taking the match into extra time.
SuperSport scored with10 minutes left when substitute Dipsy Selolwane rifled in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area and Antony Laffor provided an insurance goal one minute from the end.
