Kick-off: 18:00pm
Lamontville Golden Arrows have cruised to 2-0 Absa Premiership win over Chippa United at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.
Norman Smith scored a brace of goals to give coach Manqoba Mngqithi a victory on his return to the club against the Cape Town side who released him after just two matches of this campaign.
It was a deserved success for the hosts, who never looked in any trouble in the game as they dominated both halves against the newly-promoted side.
Great play from Philani Shange early on created a chance for Zambian Justine Zulu, but his first touch let him down and Chippa were able to clear.
Smith, who had an outstanding game, set up his strike-partner Bongani Ntuli for a shot on goal inside 10 minutes, but the effort was blocked by Chippa’s Nigerian defender James Okwuosa.
Smith created an opportunity for himself next, working into space with a clever turn, but his shot in the end was deflected wide.
Chippa’s first chance fell to Petrus Ngebo, but the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker skied the effort over the bar.
After Zulu had seen another shot saved, he set up Nkosinathi Ogle, who shot rather than passed to the open Smith inside the box.
Abafana Bes’thende finally did get the goal their play deserved on 33 minutes, Smith providing a delightful lob to give his team the advantage.
They might have had another before halftime as visiting goalkeeper Kassaly Daouda saved from Ogle.
But it was 2-0 five minutes after the break and again Smith was the man on target. Ogle’s cross was not cut out by the Chippa defence and the striker netted his third goal in four games.
Ritus Krjauklis had an ambitious effort from 30 yards that went high and wide, before Daouda made an excellent save to deny Shange from range. Nkanyiso Madonsela was brought on for his PSL debut for the club with 10 minutes remaining.
Golden Arrows can now look forward to their next Absa Premiership fixture, an away trip to Kaizer Chiefs on November 6.
