4 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Nedbank Cup
Date: Saturday, 23 February 2013
Venue: Makhulong Stadium
Kick-off: 20: 15pm
Lamontville Golden Arrows have breezed into the second round of the Nedbank Cup after a 4-0 thumping of Vardos FC at the Makhulong Stadium on Saturday night.
The Gauteng SAFA Second Division side were no match for a fluent Abafana Bes’thende side, who did all the damage in the first half.
Goals from Thamsanga Gabuza, Tshepo Liphoko, Sibisiso Hadebe and Lucky Nguzana sealed the victory for Manqoba Mngqithi’s side.
Golden Arrows started on the front foot, taking the game to their lower league opposition. Gabuza might have given his side the lead inside five minutes, but blasted over with just the keeper to beat.
Justice Sithole’s header was narrowly over the bar, but just a minute later and Abafana Bes’thende were ahead.
Gabuza curled in an excellent shot from inside the box after skillfully working the space for the shot.
It was 2-0 when Orlando Pirates loanee Liphoko scored his first goal for the club just before the half-hour mark. He profited from some fine play from Nguzana.
The visitors netted two more times before halftime, Sibusiso Hadebe neatly slotting home before Nguzana got his reward as he beat the offside trap and kept his cool to round the keeper and score.
Golden Arrows goalkeeper Nkosi Gumede made a great save to deny former Maritzburg United forward Colleen Zimba as Vardos FC looked for a way back into the game.
The night was slightly soured for Golden Arrows when defender Siyanda Zwane received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
