The early sending off of goalkeeper Nkosingphile Gumede saw Lamontville Golden Arrows forced to play for some 70 minutes down to 10 men and ultimately pay a costly price.
The 1-0 home defeat to SuperSport United at the Princes Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu leaves the club still in trouble with three games left in the season as Arrows sit precariously just above the Absa Premiership relegation zone.
The team was always going to be forced to play on the back foot after Gumede’s flying tackle on Bradley Grobler in the 22nd minute left the side short and under pressure.
The teenage goalkeeper came running out to stop Grobler as he broke on the counter attack but caught him with his legs and was immediately sent off by referee Buyile Gqubule.
It left coach Manqoba Mngqithi having to shift the side around and restricted the chances that Arrows were able to create. Eventually the toil tolled on the team as they concede the game’s only goal in the 71st minute to Sameehg Doutie, who snapped up a loose ball in the penalty area after the initial effort from Thabiso Moloi had been blocked.
SuperSport dominated the early exchanges but Arrows did some alive in a fiesty spell near the end of the game. Thamsanqa Gabuza had a shot from close range in the 64th minute to remind SuperSport of the danger but the best chances came right at the end of the season.
There was a late chance for Siboniso Hadebe who despite his diminutive frame got a header in on goal from Sibusiso Zwane’s cross two minutes from the end. In stoppage time, a long throw from Joseph Musonda set up Arrows’ best chance for Gabuza but his effort was blocked at the back post by the visitors’ goalkeeper Williams.
