Lamontville Golden Arrows have been held to a 1-1 draw by Bloemfontein Celtic in their Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.
The point leaves Abafana Bes’thende nine points adrift of safety with four games remaining in the season.
Frank Mhango gave Celtic the lead in the second half, but Manti Moholo netted an excellent equaliser. Try as they might Arrows could find a winner as Celtic were reduced to 10 men late on.
Celtic had the first strike at goal inside the opening minute, Wandisile Letlabika letting fly from 30 yards that forced a finger-tip save from home goalkeeper Arthur Bartman.
Celtic then lost Davies Nkausu to injury to be replaced by Vuyusile Ntanga, but it was Arrows to threaten next when Moholo crashed a shot on goal that was saved by Celtic keeper Patrick Tignyemb.
Rudolf Bester was unlucky to fire just over as Arrows began to create chances, but the teams went into the break at 0-0.
Arrows were almost in front in the opening minute of the second half as Chris Katongo’s corner was headed just wide by Festus Mbewe.
But the visitors took the lead 10 minutes later when Malawian international Mhango provided a neat finish against the run of play.
That lead lasted a further 10 minutes before Moholo equalised with a fine long-ranger effort that crashed in off the upright and into the goal.
Celtic were reduced to 10 men when Tumelo Mogapi was red-carded for a foul on Thanduyise Khuboni with 17 minutes left on the clock.
Mbewe had an opportunity to give Arrows the lead, but blasted the ball over the bar when he might have picked out teammate Philani Shange.
Mbewe and Bongi Ntuli then missed excellent opportunities late on to seal a win for the home side, who in the end had to settle for a point.
Next up for Golden Arrows is an away trip to Platinum Stars on Saturday.
