GOLDEN ARROWS 1

1 AJAX CAPE TOWN

Competition: Absa Premiership
Date: Sunday, 24 February 2010
Venue: Chatsworth Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30

Any slim hopes Golden Arrows had of claiming a top eight place in the Absa Premiership were erased on Wednesday evening when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax Cape Town at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

The result means the reigning MTN8 champions will not have the opportunity to defend their title in the 2010/11 season. Abafana Bes’thende looked to be on course for victory when Nazeer Allie scored an own goal at the end of the first half, but Dipsy Selolwane hit back for the Urban Warriors.

The two teams cancelled each other out for most of the first half and there were few genuine goal scoring chances created. An early long range effort from Diyo Sibisi and an off-target header from Vusumuzi Vilakazi were the only real attacking highlights in the first quarter.

On 33 minutes Vilakazi should have opened the scoring when he got on the end of a Joseph Musonda cross but he failed to hit the target from just six yards out. Siyabonga Sangweni followed it up soon after with a drive from outside the box that went just over Hans Vonk’s crossbar.

Thulani Serero came close for Ajax in the 39th minute, heading just wide of goal after meeting a corner kick from the right. The visitors had just begun to string some quality play together and were putting Arrows’ defence under some pressure.

However, Ajax’s Nazeer Allie scored an unfortunate own goal on the stroke of half time to undo all his team’s good work in the first 45 minutes and send the game into the break with Abafana Bes’thende 1-0 up.

Five minutes into the second half Dipsy Selolwane almost brought the scores level with a great effort from long range but Helton Da Rocha denied him with an outstanding save.

But there was no stopping Selolwane on 57 minutes, with the Botswana international cracking home an equaliser after good set-up play by George Maluleka and Nathan Paulse.

Paulse then should have put the Urban Warriors ahead in the 65th minute, heading wide of goal from a great scoring position after a good cross by winger Sameehg Doutie. The beanpole striker had another headed effort three minutes later but this time Da Rocha was well positioned to make the save.

The remainder of the game saw few clear scoring opportunities, though the Cape side looked the likelier to add to the score line thanks to the dangerous running of Serero and the aerial power of Paulse.
