Kick-off: 20:15

Defending Nedbank Cup champions Moroka Swallows began the defence of their title with a 2-0 victory over PSL rivals Golden Arrows in a Last 32 clash at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both goals were scored by Auguston Leonard, one in each half, sending Swallows through to the next phase of the competition.

Swallows were off the mark just two minutes after kick off when Man of the Match Leonard latched onto a wayward clearance to fire Swallows spectacularly into the lead.

He completed his brace early on in the second half, turning home substitute Morgan Shivambu’s cross to put Swallows in a commanding lead.

Even though Swallows lost Bongani Khumalo early on through injury, his replacement, Morgan Shivambu, was key in helping them through to victory.

Arrows were chasing the game early when Swallows took the lead in the second minute of the match. Birds keeper Greg Etafia sent a long free kick from just inside his own half of the field which was headed up by the Arrows defence into the path of Auguston Leonard.

The Swallows player, standing on the edge of the Arrows danger zone, hit the ball on the volley with his left foot, curling it past the despairing lunge of Thulasizwe Khuzwayo to hand the hosts the advantage with an early contender for goal of the tournament.

Swallows kept possession of the ball and Arrows were having difficulty in breaking down the organised defending of the home side. It looked as though Arrows would have to shoot from far out if they wanted to get through the Birds’ rearguard.

Njabulo Manqana decided to take matters into his own hands and came up with two great opportunities to draw his team level. The first, on 33 minutes, saw him drive at goal from 30yards out and he narrowly missed the target.

Two minutes later, in a similar position, he sent a free kick just over Etafia’s crossbar. That was to be the closest Arrows would come to a goal in the first half as Swallows went into the break 1-0 up.

Like they did in the first half Swallows were quick to find a goal in the second half. It took them just six minutes to double their lead; build-up play between Collins Mbesuma and Shivambu saw them exchange a number of quick passes before the latter whipped in a cross.

Running onto the ball ahead of his marker was Leonard, who got to the ball before the Arrows defenders to toe poke the ball with his left foot past a stranded Khuzwayo to score his second goal of the night.

Soon after, Leonard had the opportunity to seal the match and complete his hat-trick but he shot over Khuzwayo’s goal in the 53rd minute. A few minutes after that and a mix up in the Arrows defence saw the ball fall to Swallows’ Ramahlwe Mphahlele, whose shot from distance went over goal.

It took until the 63rd minute in the second half for Arrows to really threaten Etafia’s goal, and it was a low drive by Nhlanhla Zothwane which had Etafia scampering across the ground to his left to stop the ball.

In the final quarter of the game Arrows upped the tempo and began to attack with more intent and purpose, but substitute Francis Kombe, after turning Swallows defender Cichon and belting the ball with his left foot, missed the target by mere inches.

With five minutes to go Arrows were again up the field and it was a failed Swallows clearance which fell to Thokozani Mshengu on the edge of the Birds’ 18-yard area; he met the ball on the volley and hit it back towards goal, drawing a fine save from Etafia.
