Interim coach Arthur Zwane made two alterations from Chiefs’ loss to Stellenbosch over the weekend, with Reeve Frosler and Nkosingiphile Nhlakanipho Ngcobo replacing Happy Mashiane and Sabelo Radebe.
The Soweto giants were eager to bounce back from the loss to Stellenbosch but they had to wait until the 17th minute for the opening goal, as a swift counter-attack ended with Leonardo Castro slipping in Khama Billiat who volleyed past Sifiso Mlungwana.
The home side, meanwhile, struggled to get their foot on the ball in the first half and were quite wasteful whenever they did manage to get the ball off the Soweto giants at times.
Arrows coaching duo of Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Mabuthi Khenyeza were not happy with what was on display and reacted by making a change 11 minutes before the break as Sbonelo Cele made way for Siboniso Conco.
The changed had no immediate effect as Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen was largely untested in the opening 45 minutes, although the visitors unable to carve out another opening at the other end despite enjoying more of the possession.
The AmaKhosi carried the momentum into the second half as they went in search of a second goal, with Keagan Dolly and Billiat combining well in the opening 10 minutes.
Chiefs interim coaches then opted for a double change on 57 minutes as Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo were replaced by Kearyn Baccus and Dumisani Zuma.
However, the home side were gifted the equaliser two minutes later when Conco intercepted Njabulo Ngcobo’s poor pass to run clear and fire past Peterson.
Chiefs eventually threw on Samir Nurkovic for the final 18 minutes as he replaced Castro while Njabulo Ngcobo’s afternoon also came to an end after being replaced by Daniel Cardoso.
However, Arrows got the winning goal with four minutes left on the clock as Michael Gumede got his sixth goal of the season by nodding Nduduzo Sibiya’s free-kick at the near post to hand Chiefs a third straight loss and keep their top eight hopes alive.
